Inspirational Entrepreneur: Meghan Marfise

After experiencing the frustration of doctor after doctor simply handing her a new prescription rather than addressing the root of her health challenges, Meghan looked to holistic health, where she found answers. Now a holistic health practitioner herself, Meghan focuses on supporting women with all things hormone related. Her interview inspires us to dig into developing our programs, even if we don’t feel like we have all aspects of our business 100% in place.

What inspired you to become a holistic entrepreneur?

After having many of my own health concerns in my teens and early twenties, I knew that had to be a better way than to just be shuffled around from one doctor to another with a new prescription in hand. It was so frustrating not to have doctors really listen to me or to be told “it’s all in your head because we can’t find anything wrong.” In my heart, I knew my doctors were not getting to the root cause of my health concerns and that there had to be a better way.

Eventually, I began looking into more alternative and holistic means of healthcare and it all just made sense. Once I started seeing a more alternative practitioner who really sat down and listened to me and took my diet and lifestyle into consideration as well, my health started to turn around. From this point on, I knew that I wanted to help others so that they would not have to feel the way I felt with being so frustrated and helpless with my own health, so I started towards a career in holistic health care.

Tell us about your business or practice.

I have always had a passion toward women’s health, hormones, and fertility. I specialize in fertility issues and balancing women’s hormones naturally, so that they can feel blissful, balanced, and glowing again. So many women are put on the birth control pill or even antidepressants for symptoms such as PMS, depression, mood swings, weight gain, acne, PCOS, low libido, or period issues. In reality, those pills are just one big band-aid that is masking the real underlining issue. What I do, is I work with women to find the root cause of their symptoms by looking at their body as one, interconnected web, in which all body systems are connected, intertwined, and relevant. What happens to one part or system, directly affects the other. From here, I put together very specific protocols using natural herbs, supplements, and lifestyle modifications, for balanced hormones and health.

What is your current business model?

I have a few options to work with clients: (1) Through my online Blissfully Balanced Hormones E-Course where members get unlimited, lifetime access to videos and specific handouts and protocols that address all areas of hormonal health; (2) through a combination of the Blissfully Balanced Hormones E-Course and private coaching, or (3) just with private coaching sessions. All of my 1:1 sessions are done via phone or Skype since I work with people in all parts of the country and world.

What has been one of your favorite moments as a business owner thus far?

Seeing clients who were really struggling with particular health concerns overcome them naturally, especially when their doctor’s wanted to put them on all sorts of medications. That’s the whole reason I’m doing this, to help women to feel amazing again and realize that they can be in the driver’s seat of their health!

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in running your business or practice?

I love what I do and am passionate about helping women, but I still struggle with the business and marketing aspect of it.

How have you overcome those challenges?

It’s a constant learning process, so I just am always trying to educate myself in that area.

How do you find new clients?

Word of mouth, online, social media, articles I’ve written on other websites.

What have you found to be most effective in securing new clients to sign up for your services?

Being honest and understanding and explaining how I work in terms of getting to the root cause rather than just rating the symptom.

What do you do to keep your existing clients engaged in the long term?

I check in and always keep them up to date with new programs

As your own boss, what is your best strategy for staying focused and productive during your workday?

Treating it like a 9-5 and realizing that just because I am my own boss doesn’t mean I can be lazy with my work commitments or priorities. I schedule the day out just as I would if I worked for someone else.

If you could start your business over again from the beginning, what would you do differently?

I probably would have spent less time on working about my website, graphics, and having everything in place and more time implementing my programs

What were some of the first mistakes you made that you would tell a new holistic entrepreneur to avoid?

Don’t spend tons of money on a website, because chances are your focus will shift and you’ll want to tweak it again anyways.

What are the top three business tools or resources you couldnt live without?

Email, Phone or Skype, my online course platform.

What has been your most effective method for growing your business?

Patience an remembering that the effort you put out now often doesn’t see results for a few months. Also, having clear cut programs.

What is your favorite indulgence?

Dark chocolate for food and massages for self care 🙂

Most exotic thing youve ever eaten?

Hmmm, will have to thing about this one as I’ve done a lot of traveling and am definitely one of those, “I’ll try anything once” type of people!

Most memorable place youve ever visited?

Costa Rica! I love it there- the sun, the water, the surf, the energy & vibes = bliss!

Last book you read?

The Good Girl’s Guide to Getting Lost by Rachel Friedman. I try to mix in some fun, easy reads with my usual health and wellness books. With my love of travel and adventure, this book was a great memoir that brought me back to my travel days:)

If you could only have one kind of food for the rest of your life, it would be

Leafy Greens- but that’s a tough question, let’s hope we are never faced with and stuck with only ever having one type of food for the rest of our lives! 🙂 I love food and having a wide variety of it!

What is your go-to breakfast?

It depends on the season and weather. In the winter I eat something warm, usually leftovers from the night before, something containing protein and veggies, but in the summer and warmer months I’ll usually whip up a green smoothie.

What do you find most fascinating about the human body?

The entire process of fertility, and what it takes to conceive. I am in constant awe of how amazingly smart and well designed our bodies are!

What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?

I love that I can help people the way I best see fit and be flexible towards the clients needs.
